Haven Pet Insurance Review 2026: Is It Worth a Quote?

Haven Pet Insurance reviewed for 2026: who underwrites it, waiting periods, the 70 or 90% plans, annual limits, what is excluded, and when Lemonade is the better quote.

Quick answer: Haven is worth getting a quote from if you want a straightforward accident and illness policy with a choice of 70 or 90 percent reimbursement, a deductible anywhere from $100 to $1,000, and an annual limit between $10,000 and $40,000 with no lifetime cap. It is underwritten by Trisura and run day to day by Odie Pet Insurance, so the claims experience is Odie's. It is not sold in Alaska, Hawaii or New Hampshire. Get a Haven quote and a Lemonade quote on the same deductible and reimbursement rate, then pick on price and fine print rather than brand.

We get a version of the same email every week. "I saw an ad for Haven. Is it a real company, and is it any good?" Fair question. Haven is a young brand, it does not have the decade of complaint history that Trupanion or Healthy Paws carries, and a lot of what you can find about it online is thin. So we did what we did for our 12-insurer fine print comparison: we read what Haven itself publishes, including its licensing disclosures and its state notices, and we only report what the company puts in writing.

One disclosure before we start. CoverHope earns a referral fee when you get a quote through some of the links on this page, including Haven's and Lemonade's. That does not change what the policy says, and we will tell you where Haven is the wrong pick.

Who actually stands behind a Haven policy

This is the part most reviews skip, and it is the part that matters most when you file a claim at 2 a.m. from an emergency clinic.

Haven Pet Insurance Agency is a licensed insurance producer. It sells the policy. It does not carry the risk.

None of that is a red flag. A large share of US pet insurance is sold this way, with a brand on the front, an administrator in the middle and an insurer at the back. It does mean that when you read reviews, the ones about Odie's claims handling are the ones that tell you how Haven will treat you.

What a Haven policy covers

Haven sells accident and illness coverage. In plain terms, that means the unexpected: a swallowed sock, a torn ligament from a bad landing, a urinary blockage in a male cat, diabetes, cancer, a skin infection that keeps coming back. Covered treatment is reimbursed after your annual deductible and your co-insurance share, up to the annual limit on your declarations page.

The four numbers you choose

SettingHaven's rangeWhat we would pick for most pets
Reimbursement70% or 90%90% for a young pet you plan to keep insured for life
Annual deductible$100 to $1,000$250 to $500, the price sweet spot for most quotes
Annual limit$10,000 to $40,000$10,000 for most cats, $20,000 or more for large dogs
Lifetime capNoneNot a choice, and that is good news

The interesting choice is the annual limit. Unlimited policies sound safer, and for a giant-breed dog with a long list of breed risks they can be. But the honest data on vet spending is that most pets never come close to $10,000 in vet bills in a single year. A cat with chronic kidney disease or hyperthyroidism generates a long tail of moderate bills rather than one catastrophic one. A capped annual limit with no lifetime cap fits that pattern well, and it usually costs less than an unlimited plan from the same kind of insurer.

The add-ons

Two things that some insurers include in the base plan are sold separately at Haven: exam fees and take-home prescription medication. That is the same approach Lemonade, Embrace and Figo take, and it is the single most common reason a pet owner gets a smaller check than expected. A $90 exam fee on every sick visit adds up across a bad year. If your quote is cheap, check whether it includes the exam fee add-on before you celebrate.

Haven also offers a separate wellness plan for routine care. On its own calculator it is shown at $34.99 a month with up to $700 back a year across six routine care categories, paid without the deductible or co-insurance. We are skeptical of wellness add-ons in general. Run the math: if you would not otherwise spend $420 a year on routine care, the plan costs you more than it returns. Our pet savings account vs insurance math walks through the same trade-off.

Waiting periods, in Haven's own words

Haven's notice to state residents, for policies underwritten by Trisura Insurance Company, says:

Two cautions. First, Haven's broader disclosure says waiting periods vary by policy, carrier and state, and that cruciate ligament events may carry their own wait. Earlier this year we found a longer cruciate wait described for most states, so read the sample policy for your state before you assume the 30-day figure applies to a knee. Second, anything that shows clinical signs during the waiting period becomes a pre-existing condition and is excluded for good. Do not let your policy start the day after you notice a limp.

What Haven will not pay for

The exclusions are standard for the industry, but worth reading in one place:

  1. Pre-existing conditions. Haven's disclosures say they are not covered. Its lookback window for deciding what counts as pre-existing is longer than some competitors', so gather your vet records before you enroll and expect the insurer to read them.
  2. Routine and preventive care, unless you buy the wellness plan.
  3. Exam fees and take-home medication, unless you buy those add-ons.
  4. Anything during the waiting period, as above.

If your pet already has a diagnosis, no new policy is going to cover it. That is true at Haven and everywhere else. Our guide to pre-existing conditions at Lemonade explains the narrow "cured condition" route some insurers offer.

How Haven compares with Lemonade

Lemonade is the comparison most of our readers ask about, because both brands sell mostly online and both price aggressively. The differences are structural, which is exactly why a quote from each tells you more than two quotes from look-alike insurers.

Where Haven wins: no accident waiting period on Trisura policies, and a narrower, simpler menu of limits that makes quotes easier to compare.

Where Lemonade wins: a wider range of annual limits, including much higher ceilings for owners of dogs with expensive breed risks, an 80 percent middle option, and a longer public track record on fast claims. Our Lemonade pet insurance review covers where it falls short too.

Who Haven is a good fit for

Who should look elsewhere

How to get an honest quote comparison in ten minutes

  1. Pick one set of numbers and hold it constant: for example, 90 percent reimbursement, a $500 deductible and a $10,000 annual limit.
  2. Get a Haven quote with those settings.
  3. Get a Lemonade quote with the same settings.
  4. Add the exam fee add-on to both, or to neither. Mixing them up is the most common comparison mistake we see.
  5. Read the state sample policy for the winner, specifically the waiting periods, the pre-existing definition and the cruciate ligament clause.
  6. Multiply the monthly premium by 12 and add your deductible. That is your worst-case cost for a normal bad year. Compare that number, not the monthly price.

Our verdict

Haven is a legitimate, sensibly designed accident and illness policy from a newer brand with an established insurer behind it. It will not suit every pet, and the add-on structure means the headline price is rarely the price you should compare. For most cats and most small to medium dogs, though, it deserves a slot as one of the three quotes you collect. Start your Haven quote, and put it side by side with Lemonade before you decide.
